Mammal – Definition, Characteristics, Nomenclature

Mammals are a type of vertebrates and the most developed animals in the kingdom. They are warm-blooded animals whose body is covered with pilus or fur. The most significant features of mammals are listed below.

Trunk covered with hair or fur;
Presence of sweat glands;
Presence of three, middle ear basic;
Presence of mammary glands;
Presence of unmarried, lower jaw basic in each side of the face;
Possession of a neocortex in the brain;
Development of the embryo inside the uterus;
Giving birth to alive immature.

The three types of mammals are placentals, monotremes, and marsupials.

Placentals – They nourish the young through the placenta within the womb. Ex: Primate, carnivores, rodents, etc

Marsupials – They give birth to incompletely-adult immature. Ex: kangaroos, possums, koalas, and bandicoots.
Monotremes – They lay large yolky eggs. Ex: echidnas and platypuses
